WHAT IS SMA?

Understand what is happening

Explained medically

Medically: spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a genetic condition caused by a mutation in the SMN1 gene. Motor neurones in the spinal cord degenerate. It is classified as SMA type 1 (severe, infancy), SMA type 2 (intermediate), SMA type 3 (mild, walking preserved or lost) and SMA type 4 (adult onset). New gene therapies (Zolgensma) and splice modifiers (Spinraza/Evrysdi) have transformed the outlook.

Experienced in everyday life

The muscles are weaker than other people’s. Some movements work with a great deal of effort, others not at all. Living with SMA means finding out anew each day what is possible — and sometimes noticing that what worked yesterday is harder today. Focused therapy can steady this course and keep abilities for longer.

Working together with your consultant

Your specialists for movement therapy in SMA — under the medical care of your neurologist

Diagnosis and medical treatment of spinal muscular atrophy — including modern therapies such as gene therapy or SMN2 modulators — lie with specialist neurologists. We are your specialists for the accompanying movement therapy that maintains and builds motor function. We agree the therapy goals closely with the medical findings and the course of the illness. The focus is on building strength, maintaining walking or sitting and trunk control, and respiratory therapy.

Our therapies

Our therapies in SMA

In SMA, therapy is not optional — it is essential. Together with modern medicines such as nusinersen (Spinraza) or risdiplam (Evrysdi), specialist supporting therapy shows striking results: what the medication makes possible neurologically, focused physiotherapy turns into function — in strength, coordination and everyday ability. An experienced therapy team provides treatment that is targeted and tailored to you.

This page is for adults with SMA. Information on SMA therapy for children and young people can be found at HOME4MOTION Kids.

How does it feel?

What people with this condition experience

SMA shows itself very differently depending on type and stage — from mild weakness to severe impairment.

Medical
Muscle weakness / atrophy
In everyday life

The affected muscles are weaker from birth or become progressively weaker. What others do effortlessly takes people with SMA enormous effort.

Medical
Limited mobility
In everyday life

This varies with the type of SMA: from mild weakness to full wheelchair use. Mobility is the central issue.

Medical
Impaired breathing
In everyday life

In more severe forms of SMA the breathing muscles are involved — which calls for respiratory support and particular therapeutic care.

Medical
Swallowing problems
In everyday life

In some forms of SMA the swallowing and speech muscles are affected too — speech and language therapy is then an important part of treatment.

Frequently asked questions

Neuromuscular conditions: questions about therapy and rehabilitation in Austria

Answers to the most common questions about your condition and therapy — explained clearly and gathered in one place. So you can read at your own pace and come to your appointment well prepared and at ease.

What is SMA (spinal muscular atrophy)?▾
SMA is a genetic neuromuscular condition in which motor neurones in the spinal cord die off. This leads to progressive muscle weakness. SMA occurs at different levels of severity (types 1–4) and can affect both children and adults.
Which therapies help in SMA?▾
In SMA we use physiotherapy (muscle strength, breathing, preventing contractures), occupational therapy (everyday skills, assistive devices) and speech and language therapy (swallowing). HOME4MOTION offers specialist SMA therapy for children and adults in Graz and Vienna.
How does SMA change over time?▾
SMA takes a very different course depending on type. While type 1 is usually severe and progresses quickly, people with type 3 or 4 can stay mobile for a long time. Regular rehabilitation matters at every stage, to preserve function and quality of life.
Are there new treatment options in SMA?▾
Yes — in recent years new medicines (for example nusinersen, risdiplam) have been approved that influence the course of SMA positively. This medication is complemented by specialist physiotherapy and occupational therapy. HOME4MOTION works closely with treating neurologists.
What part does respiratory therapy play in SMA?▾
In SMA the breathing muscles are often affected as well. Respiratory therapy and breathing exercises are therefore an important part of rehabilitation — particularly in SMA types 1 and 2. Our physiotherapy team at HOME4MOTION specialises in respiratory therapy for neuromuscular conditions.
How does HOME4MOTION support children and adults with SMA?▾
HOME4MOTION offers specialist outpatient rehabilitation for people with SMA in Graz and Vienna. Our team of experienced neurological therapists draws up individual therapy plans — matched to age, SMA type and current abilities. We support those affected and their families for the long term.
