What is intensive therapy?

More therapy, more progress

Intensive neurological therapy is high-dose outpatient rehabilitation in which people are treated intensively for three to five hours a day — over one to three weeks. High-dose outpatient rehabilitation means: instead of one session a week, you train for several hours every day — over one to three weeks. The brain learns through repetition — neuroplasticity needs intensity.

Our intensive therapy for neurological conditions is for adults after a stroke and with MS, Parkinson's disease, spinal cord injuries and other diagnoses. The therapy is outpatient — you sleep in your own bed or in our accessible apartments in Graz.

“Step by step towards independence — our specialist intensive therapy is designed to achieve the greatest possible progress in a short time.”

Why intensive therapy?

What sets intensive therapy apart from regular therapy

Research is clear: the intensity of therapy is decisive for progress. High-dose neurological rehabilitation achieves in weeks what would otherwise take months.

Making use of neuroplasticity

The brain changes through repetition. Thousands of exercise repetitions a day stimulate new neural connections far more strongly than occasional training.

Fast results

Many clients report noticeable improvement after only one or two weeks — in walking, arm function, language or independence.

Focused on your goal

During the intensive phase we concentrate entirely on your personal goals — no distractions, the therapist’s full attention.

Measurable progress

Video analysis before and after intensive therapy makes your improvement visible. Standardised tests record your progress objectively.

Interdisciplinary team

Physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech and language therapy and recoveriX work hand in hand during the intensive phase — holistic therapy under one roof.

Motivation through innovation

Robot-assisted devices and interactive therapy games keep intensive therapy varied and motivating even at high frequency.

Intensive therapy in Austria at HOME4MOTION

Our team — specialised since 2018

HOME4MOTION was founded in 2018 as the first interdisciplinary neurological therapy centre of its kind in Graz. Since then we have carried out more than 280 courses of intensive therapy and supported more than 150 adults with neurological conditions. Our team of neuro-physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists and the neuro-orthopaedic consultant Dr Martin Švehlík works every day to the current scientific guidelines for neurological rehabilitation. The methods we use — among them high-dose treadmill training, LSVT BIG, robot-assisted arm therapy and recoveriX — are supported by clinical studies.

Frequently asked questions

What you want to know about intensive therapy

The key answers at a glance — so you arrive well prepared.

How many hours of therapy a day are possible?▾
Depending on what you can manage, three to five hours a day are possible. We keep the length and the breaks flexible — always matched to how you feel that day. The programme is agreed afresh each morning.
Can I come for intensive therapy even with severe impairment?▾
Yes — intensive therapy is not only for those mildly affected. We offer intensive programmes in severe hemiparesis, for wheelchair users and in ALS as well. In the first conversation we work out together what is realistic and sensible.
How long after a stroke can I still have intensive therapy?▾
It is never too late. Neuroplasticity — the brain’s ability to rewire itself — remains throughout life. Many of our clients come years after their stroke and still make clear progress.
Does health insurance cover the cost of intensive therapy?▾
HOME4MOTION is a private institute. In many cases reimbursement through statutory health insurance or private supplementary insurance is possible. In the initial consultation we go through all the options for your situation.
What is the difference between intensive therapy and a focus programme?▾
Focus programmes are structured programmes with fixed content, length and goal (three weeks of gait focus, for example). Intensive therapy is more flexible — we combine several areas of therapy each day and adapt everything to you.
