WHAT IS ALS?

Understand what is happening

Explained medically

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive disease of the upper and lower motor neurones. Spasticity (upper motor neurone) and flaccid paralysis (lower motor neurone) can occur at the same time. ALS affects bulbar function (speech, swallowing) and spinal function (limbs, breathing).

Experienced in everyday life

The hands grow weaker — first with writing, then with gripping. Speech sounds different. Swallowing takes effort. ALS changes the body progressively — yet thinking, personality and love for the people around you remain. Therapy can slow the pace of loss and protect quality of life for as long as possible.

Working together with your consultant

Specialist supporting therapy in ALS — alongside your ALS centre

Diagnosis, monitoring and medical care in ALS are provided by specialist neurologists, often at an ALS centre. As specialists in supporting ALS therapy we work to preserve mobility, independence and quality of life — adapted to each stage of the illness. Close coordination with your treating team matters a great deal to us. Our focus is on keeping you walking, supporting breathing within therapy, and swallowing and speech in dysarthria and dysphagia.

How does it feel?

What people with this condition experience

ALS shows itself differently in each person — depending on whether the motor neurones in the brain or in the spinal cord are affected first.

Medical
Progressive muscle weakness
In everyday life

Muscles that can no longer be activated waste away. What still works today — a flight of stairs, lifting a glass — may be harder tomorrow.

Medical
Dysarthria / dysphonia
In everyday life

The voice changes — quieter, less clear

Medical
Dysphagia
In everyday life

Swallowing becomes harder. Liquids cause problems. Meals take longer and need concentration.

Medical
Spasticity and fasciculations
In everyday life

Muscles twitch uncontrollably (fasciculations). Stiffness and involuntary contractions accompany the weakness.

Frequently asked questions

ALS: questions about therapeutic support and outpatient care

Answers to the most common questions about your condition and therapy — explained clearly and gathered in one place. So you can read at your own pace and come to your appointment well prepared and at ease.

What is ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis)?▾
ALS is a serious neurological condition in which motor nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord progressively die. This leads to increasing muscle weakness and paralysis. ALS cannot currently be cured, but specialist therapy can preserve quality of life and independence in the long term.
Which therapies help in ALS?▾
In ALS we use physiotherapy (maintaining mobility, respiratory therapy), occupational therapy (assistive devices, everyday skills), speech and language therapy (speech and swallowing) and dietary advice. HOME4MOTION supports people with ALS with a therapy programme made for them, in Graz and Vienna.
How can physiotherapy help in ALS?▾
Physiotherapy in ALS aims to preserve movement for as long as possible, reduce spasticity and support breathing. Well-judged training avoids muscle fatigue and improves quality of life — including at advanced stages of the illness.
Which assistive devices are used in ALS?▾
Depending on the stage of the illness, walking aids, wheelchairs, communication aids, respiratory support and special cutlery or writing aids are used. Our occupational therapy team at HOME4MOTION advises individually on the best provision in Graz and Vienna.
How does HOME4MOTION support people with ALS and their families?▾
HOME4MOTION supports people with ALS and their families with an interdisciplinary team of physiotherapists, occupational therapists and speech and language therapists. We keep adapting therapy to the course of the illness and support family members with care at home.
How does ALS progress and what can people expect?▾
ALS progresses at a different pace in each person. In most cases the muscle weakness advances steadily. With well-matched therapy and the right assistive devices, however, people can lead an active and dignified life for a long time. HOME4MOTION is at your side at every stage.
