WHAT IS A COMPLETE SPINAL CORD INJURY?

Understand what is happening

Explained medically

A complete spinal cord injury (AIS A) means total loss of motor and sensory function below the level of the lesion. In paraplegia (thoracic or lumbar spine) both legs are affected; in tetraplegia (cervical spine) the arms and hands as well. The level of the lesion determines which functions remain.

Experienced in everyday life

From one moment to the next the connection to the body is gone. Everything below the injury can no longer be felt. Movements that used to be automatic are suddenly impossible. A complete spinal cord injury means starting life again — on different terms, but not without possibilities.

Working together with your consultant

Spinal cord injury rehabilitation — specialists for the time after acute care

Initial medical care and diagnosis in complete spinal cord injury are provided by trauma surgeons, orthopaedic surgeons and neurologists at specialist rehabilitation centres. We are your specialists for outpatient spinal cord rehabilitation afterwards: maintaining the mobility that remains, building strength in the areas that still function, and training for more independence in everyday life. Therapy is planned in line with your medical rehabilitation reports. The focus is on transfer training, trunk stability, hand and arm function and advice on assistive devices.

How does it feel?

What people with this condition experience

A complete spinal cord injury affects more than movement and sensation — it changes every area of life.

Medical
Total loss of movement below the lesion
In everyday life

Below the level of the injury all muscles are paralysed. The legs (in paraplegia), or the legs and arms (in tetraplegia), cannot be moved.

Medical
Total loss of sensation
In everyday life

Touch, pain

Medical
Spasticity
In everyday life

Although no voluntary movement is possible, involuntary muscle contractions (spasms) can occur — sometimes painful, sometimes as uncontrolled movement.

Medical
Bladder and bowel dysfunction
In everyday life

Control over bladder and bowel is lost — which calls for aids, routines and a great deal of adaptation in daily life.
